Ceremonial Matcha in Barcelona — What Makes Ours Different

Barcelona's matcha scene has grown rapidly, but not all matcha is equal. Most powders sold in cafés and supermarkets across the city are culinary grade — processed, bitter, and stripped of the amino acids that give ceremonial matcha its signature calm focus and umami taste.

At Bonsai Matcha, every powder we sell is 100% ceremonial grade, which means:

  • Shade-grown for 3–4 weeks before harvest (increases L-theanine and chlorophyll)
  • First spring harvest only (ichibancha) — the most nutrient-dense leaves
  • Stone-ground in small batches — no industrial heat that degrades flavour
  • No additives, no fillers, no sugar — pure Japanese powder
  • Origin-specific: you know exactly which region and cultivar you're drinking

Our Ceremonial Matchas

We currently offer four ceremonial-grade matchas, each with a distinct character and moment in the day. All four are €34.95 for 30g when you order within Spain, €37.50 elsewhere in the EU.

ASAHI — The Morning Matcha (Kyoto)
Smooth, creamy, gentle sweetness. A blend of Okumidori, Saemidori and Yabukita from Kyoto. The perfect introduction to ceremonial grade — zero bitterness, full umami.

ZEN — The Focus Matcha (Kagoshima)
Single-cultivar Okumidori grown in volcanic Kagoshima soil. Clean, mineral, consistent. The matcha for deep work, study, or a focused midday ritual.

YŪHI — The Evening Matcha (Kyoto)
Four-cultivar Kyoto blend with mellow sweetness and a soft finish. Lower caffeine — ideal for winding down without giving up the ritual.

KIYOSHI — The Umami Matcha (Kagoshima)
Saemidori and Okumidori blend from Kagoshima. Rich, deep umami character with natural sweetness. For the matcha drinker who wants maximum depth.

Not sure which to choose? The Ceremonial Tasting Set includes Asahi, Zen and Yūhi — 3 × 30g tins to taste the range and find your match.

Why Barcelonans Are Switching from Coffee to Matcha

Barcelona has one of Europe's strongest café cultures — but more and more people are discovering that matcha offers something espresso can't: calm, sustained energy without the crash. The L-theanine in ceremonial matcha moderates the caffeine effect, producing focused clarity rather than an anxious spike.

If you're someone who loves their morning ritual but wants a cleaner, smoother alternative on certain days — or you're looking for an afternoon drink that won't disrupt sleep — ceremonial matcha is exactly that.

Most Barcelonans who try Bonsai Matcha's ceremonial grade for the first time say the same thing: "I had no idea matcha could taste like this."

How to Prepare Your Matcha at Home

You don't need a professional setup. A basic matcha bowl and bamboo whisk is enough to make a café-quality cup at home. Here's the method we recommend:

  1. Sift 1.5g of matcha into your bowl (a teaspoon sifter helps)
  2. Add 70ml of water at 70–75°C — don't boil, it scorches the leaves
  3. Whisk in a fast W motion for 20–30 seconds until frothy
  4. Drink immediately, plain — no milk or sugar needed for ceremonial grade

If you prefer a latte: prepare with 30ml of water, then add 150ml of warm oat milk. The sweetness of oat milk pairs perfectly with the umami of ceremonial grade.

Want the full setup? The Matcha Starter Kit includes ZEN ceremonial matcha, a bamboo whisk, and a bamboo scoop — everything you need to start a proper matcha ritual at home.
